A light shining from Kirkcudbright

It's not only Edinburgh where you can find a lively fringe festival. For a second year, Kirkcudbright will be host to a long weekend mix of music, visual arts exhibitions, performance, comedy, walks and talks.

From Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th September, the 'artists' town' in Dumfries and Galloway will see classical music from the Scottish Ensemble, an adult-only evening of jokes and laughter from Fem de la Femme, local bands performing on the Harbour Square Stage and a 'viva Kirkcudbright' performance of the songs of Elvis, the King of Rock & Roll.

Amongst the thought-provoking talks across the Kirkcudbright Fringe: considerations on political leadership by Gerry Hassan and Rosie Ilett; political broadcaster and academic John Curtice reflecting on July's general election; Guardian sketch writer and satirist John Crace; journalist Jen Stout on her visits to Ukraine at the start of the Russian invasion; the legendary Scottish footballer Rose Reilly on the history of the women's game; Richard Blair on his father, George Orwell; discussion on the future of art and culture in Dumfries and Galloway - and Scotland more widely; and Joyce McMillan in conversation with the journalist, writer and novelist Neal Ascherson, 'one of the most influential writers and observers of Scotland, the UK and Europe since the 1960s'.
