Who’s been Trumped?

Is the 45th, unfortunately, the American President who has had the most direct impact on our country?

With the USA elections only a few weeks away - in which he hopes to become the 47th, too – some good people in Montrose have had the wit and imagination to put on a short film festival covering all the appalling impacts of Donald Trump’s golf club projects in Scotland: (How many people will display the fortitude, resolve and resilience to attend three successive evenings of documentary film showings, we will see …)

We hope that the attendance is considerable. With the 18-hole links MacLeod Course - named after Trump’s Lewis-born mother, Mary – due to ‘welcome players’ at Menie from next summer, this is a very timely initiative, spinning off from Montrose’s impressive LandxSea Film Festival.

The ‘Trump Trilogy’ offers a unique perspective on how the projects decided on by powerful interests, like Donald Trump’s Aberdeenshire developments, can leave lasting scars on the environment and local populations. Directed by Montrose-based Anthony Baxter, the three films explore the long-term environmental consequences of large-scale developments.

‘You’ve Been Trumped’ which shows at the Montrose Playhouse in Angus on Friday 1 November ‘explores how Donald Trump's golf resort in Aberdeenshire disrupted the local environment and community, igniting a fight over land rights and environmental justice’. The following night’s cinema experience ‘reveals how luxury golf resorts around the world affect the environment and local communities, raising questions about sustainable development and the social cost of such projects’. And the Sunday night film documents the ongoing impact of the Menie Estate development on local residents, particularly a 92-year-old Scottish widow who responded by fighting ‘against the odds’ for environmental justice.
